There’s Poison in the Spring — A Memoir

This memoir is a work of nonfiction. Although creative language is used throughout, special attention has been given to details and facts....

Precocious Progeny

I imagine you

scaling Colorado’s Fourteeners,

unable to shed the challenge

because you breathe for the struggle,

just to persevere –

just to triumph –

just so you can look down on the rainbow,

while in the midst of the heavens

demanding of the gods

“What’s next?”

I imagine you

learning to trim sail,

weave knots, and discern the constellations;

mastering tomorrow’s sky

by judging tonight’s halo moon.

So many seas I’ve left you to conquer –

much like waves arguing with resolution

to challenge destiny.

Do you sell your heart in Jackson Square?

Walk, warm hand in yours, along The Strand?

Will you chase the dancing dolphins off Waikiki?

What has become of the dream I’ve borne?

I trust you

will not stifle Rebellious passion –

for you must consecrate pain

to tame the world!
